This name was bestowed on the area in 1944 by a real person, Curtis Howe Springer, who claimed it was the last word of the English language. The settlement, pretty much in the middle of nowhere near the border between California and Nevada, had previously been known as Camp Soda and Soda Springs, after its natural spring.
