9. Birmingham, Alabama
Most Americans may like to consider this southern city to be one of those quiet and quaint towns nestled in the Bible belt, but the statistics coming out of Birmingham over the last few years paint a very different picture.
Our friends over at Neighborhood Scout report that Birmingham is home to one of the highest crime rates of any other city, no matter the size, in the entire US.
Business Insider also details that there are many different factors that may be contributing to these statistics including poverty, as it is part of Jefferson County, filed for bankruptcy in 2012. Crime rates collected and analyzed by Business Insider for 2012 show that Birmingham had 31 murders, 71 forcible rapes and 461 robberies all per 100,000 people.
The information they are reporting on the number of violent crimes in Birmingham is so high that within the state of Alabama 95 percent of other communities have a lower crime rate. This data revealed by the team at Neighborhood Scout means that citizens of Birmingham have a 1 in 12 chance of becoming a victim of either a violent or property crime.
They also highlight that in addition to having one of the highest violent crime rates out of any other city in the US Birmingham is home to a very large number of property crimes each year. That means your home and other personal items are not immune to the possibility of being involved in one of these crimes.
The most common property crimes include burglary, arson and motor vehicle theft. Within the city limits of Birmingham citizens have a 1 in 14 chance of being a victim of property theft.
This all makes it tough for many residents who own a home or other valuable things within city limits to avoid becoming a victim of some sort of crime at some point during their time there.
