13. Oakland, California
The history of crime in the city of Oakland is well known throughout the country and the rest of the world; and, unfortunately, as the years go by, things in the city seem to be going from bad to very, very bad.
The city has had to deal with a number of issues that largely contribute to its astronomical crime rates, including constant budget cuts and a lack of funding, as reported by Business Insider. Their data also shows that in 2012 alone, violent robberies were the most common crime with reports showing an almost unbelievable number of 1,086 instances per 100,000 people within city limits.
The Huffington Post confirms that these numbers appear to have increased by 30 percent in 2013. Business Insider data went on to reveal that the FBI reported an unsettling 32 murders per 100,000 residents and 68 forcible rapes per 100,000 residents in 2012 in this west coast city. This brings the chances for the average person in Oakland to become a victim of a violent crime to 1 in 50, says Neighborhood Scout.
Neighborhood Scout also reports that property related crimes in Oakland are also extremely common and add to its high ranking on our most dangerous list. The average person living within the city limits may at some point have to face arson, burglary, motor vehicle theft or larceny.
These stats show that the chances of being a victim of one of these crimes is at an alarming rate of 1 in 15 people on average. Their research also shows that in the state of California 99 percent of the other communities boast lower crime rates than that of Oakland.
Also, as we’ve mentioned previously, when it comes to property related crimes, the chances for having your car stolen are very high in most of these cities but in Oakland, this nearly doubles at a crazy rate of 1 in 57.
